Last Sunday, Kris, Anders, and I left for the Black Hills in South Dakota. Kris had been to the Black Hills when he was younger, but it was a first for both Anders and I. We had a wonderful trip with great weather and a lot of fun memories! With all the driving that goes along with a trip like this Anders was a great travel buddy for us. He never complained about the long rides.
Day 1- Windmills, Floods, Cabela's, and Chamberlain
It was on and off downpours when we were trying to pack the car, so Kris loaded the cargo carrier in the garage. We don't have the room that the van had, so this handy carrier worked very well. I was just hoping that he wouldn't pull a Clark W. Griswold backing out.
Windmills were the first highlight of the trip for Anders. He was quite mesmerized by all of them and it made the first stretch of the trip go smoothly. Anders also had a camera to take pictures with, so we will never run out of windmill pictures.
Our first stop was Worthington, MN and we had lunch at the Ground Round. A student had given me a gift card, so Kris was even more excited about it.
The "License Plate Game" was something that kept us occupied for the trip (Anders took this picture). We ended up with 34 states on the trip and will never forget the question, "Is that a new one?"
When we neared Luverne, Minnesota we were told to exit by the State Trooper. The freeway was flooded and they were rerouting traffic. However, this must have just happened because there were no signs. We assumed the people in front of us were using their GPS, so we followed. It seemed that every route we tried, we had to turn around because of flooding. You can imagine what a mess this was when everyone was doing it. Ahhhh!
Desperate, we tried this dirt road. Finally, after two hours, we made it back to the freeway.
After the detours, a stop at Cabela's was just what we needed.
Chamberlain, South Dakota would be our stopping point for the night. What a beautiful town right on the Missouri River. We ended up staying at Lee's Motor Inn Best Western. For an older motel, our room was clean and we were upgraded to a two- room suite, which was nice.
Pool Time!!
We found a nice Italian restaurant for supper right across the street and enjoyed some pizza.
